Stop Disasters!

Stop Disasters!
Is an online disaster risk simulation that was developed by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. It plays like a sophisticated online game … but it was originally designed as a training tool for government agencies.
I actually used this with my high school civics, geography and sociology students as a way to develop thoughtful problem solving skills that involved public policy. Its fun - in a kind of "Ruler of the Universe" way and the casualties and death totals are dark and edgy enough to interest even the most jaded teen.
The simulations have the players make calculated choices during a set time frame (until the natural disaster strikes) which effect survival in the area. The simulations address natural hazards like wildfires and flooding and the player’s choices involve cost and effect decisions like how many hospitals to build etc.
The time until the disaster strikes is set by the player (novice players will want to go slow). As the disaster becomes eminent there are signals and sounds that add to the excitement/apprehension of the coming disaster and whether the player has made sound policy decisions.
Like most complex games you will learn more and more just by jumping in and playing it. Savvy tech teens will figure out quickly how to transition between the disaster windows of the area.
